It’s an embarrassment of riches. Nijmegen is already the Best Cycling City in the Netherlands and there already is an existing bike route between the it and Arnhem. According to Streetfilms.org, this film’s producer, the route is perfectly safe and usable. But it does have many junctions where you need to stop for lights or other road inconveniences. So they did what seemed obvious to these two Dutch cities—they built the Arnhem-Nijmegen Cycle Superhighway, where you can ride 18 kilometres without having to stop once for cars.

Not surprisingly it’s got even more Dutch commuters out of their cars and onto bikes. And to help make the commute more fun, the colour of the lights in tunnels along the route is triggered by an app on your phone that senses how many kilometres you have on the Superhighway. “When you ride more often, you get more colours,” so you can get a real light show if you ride a lot—and if another rider with more points enters the tunnel, their light show takes over.
